Vacunación frente al VPH: 10 años con más certezas que dudas


El cáncer de cérvix es el cuarto tipo de cáncer más frecuente en mujeres, con la aparición de 528.000 nuevos casos al año (1). La relación causal existente entre el VPH y el cáncer de cuello uterino ha quedado completamente establecida desde que el virólogo alemán ZurHausen lo demostrara en 1977. Las evidencias epidemiológicas, microbiológicas, anatomopatológicas y estudios moleculares han permitido confirmar esta relación. Se puede afirmar que el VPH es la causa necesaria, aunque no suficiente, para la producción del cáncer de cérvix, existiendo cofactores adicionales que condicionan la carcinogénesis tras la infección por el VPH (2). También está muy implicado en el desarrollo de otros cánceres en el área anogenital y en la cabeza y el cuello.

La introducción en los calendarios vacunales oficiales de la inmunización frente al VPH en chicas adolescentes hace ya aproximadamente 10 años, supuso la segunda oportunidad de prevenir una patología oncológica mediante la prevención de un virus con una vacuna, concepto ya iniciado con la vacuna de la hepatitis B en los años 90.
