Vacunación contra el meningococo B


La vacunación contra H. influenzae tipo B y Streptococcus pneumoniae ha determinado que la causa principal de meningitis bacteriana y sepsis sea en nuestro medio Neisseria meningitidis.

Existen hasta un total de 12 serogrupos conocidos de Neisseria meningitidis, aunque de éstos, seis son los causantes de la mayoría de casos de enfermedad meningocócica invasiva (A, B, C, W X e Y), siendo el serogrupo más frecuente en países occidentales el serogrupo B.

La enfermedad meningocócica puede evolucionar de manera muy rápida (menos de 48 horas), con una gran morbimortalidad.
