La incidencia de amputación de un miembro inferior es de un 20 por 100.000 habitantes, 60% de ellos son hombres y el 80% son mayores de 65 años. Alrededor del 90 al 95% de los casos, las amputaciones son el resultado de complicaciones vasculares y se realizan tras fracasos de cirugías de recanalización.

La amputación causa una incapacidad permanente y las personas con pérdida de extremidades inferiores van a depender del uso de la prótesis durante el resto de sus vidas. Por este motivo, las innovaciones tecnológicas son vitales para mejorar la calidad de vida de estos pacientes. Garantizar la suspensión del encaje es un requisito tecnológico esencial, ya que la prótesis habrá fracasado en su función si la prótesis no está unida de forma segura y eficiente al muñón.
