Es conocido que alrededor de 1.200 personas en España presentan anualmente una Lesión Medular, teniendo en cuenta tanto las de origen traumático como las producidas por otras causa: vascular, infecciosa, tumoral, hernia discal, etc.

La práctica general de las visitas a las personas con LM sugiere que, aunque son pocos en número, tienen un alto consumo de recursos sanitarios, tanto de los servicios de medicina generalcomo de las diferentes especialidades médicas: rehabilitación, urología, cirugía ortopédica y cirugía plástica entre otros.

Las personas con esta discapacidad crónica se encuentran entre los usuarios que más frecuentan los sistemas de salud y, sin embargo, a menudo se encuentran en desventaja cuando buscan obtener la atención, de tal forma que no tienen las mismas oportunidades para el mantenimiento de la salud y para la prevención de la misma, en relación con sus homólogos de movilidad no reducida
