Manejo clínico del tabaquismo en el paciente psiquiátrico


A diferencia de lo que ocurre en la población general, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco en personas con trastornos mentales no ha disminuido en la última década. Así, dicha prevalencia es más elevada que en la población general. Se ha mostrado que la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco en pacientes con esquizofrenia llega hasta un 60% en pacientes ambulatorios y un 80% en  pacientes ingresados, un 60% en pacientes con trastorno bipolar, más de un 30% en pacientes con un episodio depresivo y entre un 70 y 90% en pacientes con trastorno por consumo de otras sustancias. De hecho, se sabe que casi la mitad de los cigarrillos que se venden los fuman personas con algún trastorno mental. No es desdeñable el dato que describe que los pacientes con trastornos mentales graves llegan a gastar hasta el 27% de su pensión económica en tabaco.
