En los últimos años se ha resaltado la necesidad de desarrollar una nueva clasificación de los trastornos mentales que no dependa sólo de los síntomas sino que también esté basada en la neurobiología y en el comportamiento observable con el objetivo de superar las limitaciones de los sistemas de clasificación actuales y capturar las disfunciones neurobiológicas subyacentes.

En este contexto de definir dimensiones subyacentes a los trastornos mentales se puede enmarcar el interés por la compulsividad. El objetivo es delimitar las características clínicas, neuropsicológicas y neurobiológicas de la compulsividad, y entenderlo como un fenómeno transdiagnóstico que se manifiesta en diversos trastornos mentales.
