El lupus eritematoso (LE) es una enfermedad autoinmune inflamatoria compleja, con afectación multiorgánica, que puede manifestarse de forma leve, pero también de forma que comprometa la vida de los pacientes. La patogenia sigue siendo desconocida, pero según las últimas investigaciones intervienen factores tanto de la inmunidad innata como de la inmunidad adaptativa.

El dermatólogo es importante en la vida de los pacientes con LE, porque la mayoría de los pacientes con LES tienen afectación cutánea (60%-80%), y el 25% de ellos debutan con lesiones cutáneas.
