Utilidad clínica de los perfiles de expresión génica en cáncer de mama


El cáncer de mama es una enfermedad heterogénea en cuanto a su comportamiento clínico, sus características celulares (crecimiento, diferenciación y muerte celular) y sus alteraciones genéticas. Los perfiles de expresión génica mediante la tecnología de microarrays permiten medir simultáneamente la actividad (expresión) de miles de genes en una célula de cáncer de mama. De esta manera, hemos podido profundizar en la clasificación del cáncer de mama identificando varios subtipos diferentes de cáncer de mama (luminal A, luminal B, HER2-enriquecido y basal) con claras diferencias en su pronóstico y en la expresión de dianas terapéuticas [1, 2].

Los perfiles genómicos proporcionan, por tanto, una información pronóstica y predictiva más precisa y útil que complementa la que nos aportan los factores clínico-patológicos clásicos (edad, estadio tumoral, receptores hormonales, HER2, grado histológico, entre otros).
