Es, por lo tanto, de vital importancia unos cuantos consejos para pacientes y profesionales que ayuden a gestionar el tiempo de la mejor forma. Con el resultado de que de la mejor consulta clínica posible se consiga esa sospecha diagnóstica bien orientada, se personalice el tratamiento, se ofrezcan elementos de prevención adecuados, se consuele, se acompañe o se felicite por una rehabilitación y recuperación bien encaminadas.

- Dispongan y tengan a mano la documentación identificativa (¡también el médico!, ¡que las caras se conozcan!), permisos de atención para menores o representantes de otros pacientes (ancianos, discapacitados, puntualmente por gente enferma en caso de accidente, cirugía…)
- Acudan con cita si no es imprescindible, que la presencia de urgencias no urgentes dificulta la puntualidad del profesional. Y las emergencias, en cualquier caso, pasan por delante de todo. Y anulen su cita, si no acuden. Así se evita aumentar innecesariamente las listas de espera de atención. Por usted, por los otros.
- Preparen los informes, tanto una revisión de la historia por parte del profesional como que los pacientes no se olviden de aportar los pruebas pertinentes que obren en su poder.
- Prepárense. Una pequeña lista de referencia puede servir de hilo conductor para la entrevista. ¿Quién debe prepararla? Ambas partes, por razones diferentes, para no olvidar los motivos de consulta (un compañero mío dice que más de tres es demasiado, pues no pueden ser todos igual de relevantes) y el sanitario para no perder el enfoque, siempre abierto a la derivación propia de la consulta del momento.
- Sean pacientes. Atendidos y sanitarios. Los unos con el horario, que es orientativo; todos con las dificultades de comunicación, discapacidades y la edad, que lo vuelve todo más lento.
- Los pacientes aquello que no entiendan o la información que necesiten ampliar, las dudas y los miedos. El médico, déjese abordar. No dejen cuestiones pertinentes por formular.
- Sean aseados. Es una obviedad de la que se carece por ambas partes en ocasiones. Y recuerden la importancia del lavado de manos.
- Negocien lo que haga falta. Que ambas partes terminen con buen sabor “clínico”. Las pruebas a realizar, la medicación, las derivaciones, los tratamientos, las modificaciones de los hábitos de vida. Es importante conseguir el clima de confianza, respeto y libertad para encaminar el proceso del paciente de la forma más efectiva y personalizada posible. Y que el médico, enfermería, cualquier sanitario, quede con la satisfacción del trabajo bien hecho, esa plenitud que realza la profesión.
